Penn State vs Pittsburgh Prediction
2016 College Football Week 2
It has been 15 years since Penn State and Pittsburgh have played. One of the premier college football match ups of the 1970s and 1980s ended in 2000 but is back and should be a good one. Penn State leads the series 50-42-4. Both teams are coming off week one victories against FCS foes. Pittsburgh didn’t allow Villanova to score an offensive touchdown and gave up only 172 yards while recording six sacks. However, the offense looked slow and out of sink in the 28-7 victory. Penn State’s defense didn’t allow a TD on defense either and recorded seven sacks. The Lions offense also struggled as a weak offensive line had trouble protecting the quarterback and opening any running lanes against Kent State.

About Penn State
The Lions defensive line harassed Kent State quarterbacks all day and scored when cornerback Amani Oruwariye intercepted a third-quarter pass and returned it 30 yards for a TD. Penn State’s new spread offense which featured three wide receivers and a shotgun formation on every play looked a little ragged against an inferior opponent. Sophomore quarterback Trace McSorley completed 16-of-31 passes for 209 yards with two touch downs and he ran for 49 more yards. Sophomore running back Barkley ran for 105 yards on 22 carries but he was able to break off only two runs of 10 yards or more.
James Conner, the 2014 ACC Player of the Year who missed just about all of last season battling a knee injury and Hodgkin lymphoma, scored two touchdowns and gained 53 yards on 17 carries. Quarterback Nathan Peterman completed 19-of-32 for 175 yards and threw two TD passes without an interception. A fumble loss on a sack resulted in Villanovas lone touchdowns.

Penn State vs Pittsburgh Pick
The Panthers are a trendy pick to come out of the ACC Coastal division and they return a wealth of depth and talent on both sides of the ball. However, Pittsburgh rushed for just 86 total yards against an FCS opponent. Penn State should be better on offense this week with dual-threat sophomore Trace McSorley getting a week of experience with the new offense.
These two teams should play a close and lower scoring game with neither offense having the talent to rack up big yards or big points. The Lions new offense should get better each week with experience but they still lack the talent at wide receiver to really make it work this year. The Panthers offense will suffer from a lack of top talent at wide receiver and an average offensive line. Should be a good game to watch and will come down to the end. I have it ending by a field goal on one side or the other so as long as I can get 4 points or more I am on Penn State.
