Maryland vs Kansas Preview

Number one seed Kansas Jayhawks and number five seed Maryland Terrapins each have advanced on the strength of their defense. Kansas (32-4) crushed number nine seed Connecticut 73-61 in a game that was not as close as the final score would indicate. Kansas held a 20 point halftime lead and never looked back behind a defense that held the Huskies to 33.9 percent field-goal shooting. The Jayhawks also won the rebounding battle 44-24. Kansas held Austin Peay to just 41 percent shooting in its 105-79 first-round win.

The Terrapins (27-8) started the year as a projected top-5 team and lived up to the billing for a while, before tumbling down the stretch as point guard Melo Trimble struggled. Trimble had 24 points and 8 rebounds in Maryland’s 73-60 second-round win over Hawaii. But he was just 5 of 14 from the field and is 1 of 10 on three-pointers in two NCAA Tournament games. The Terrapins relied on their defense, which held the Rainbow Warriors to just 32.9 percent shooting. They have immense talent but questionable poise, and they will need both to beat a Kansas team that is among the favorites to cut down the nets in a couple of weeks.

Maryland vs Kansas Betting Pick

Each team is holding opponents to fewer than 70 points per game on the season (Maryland allows 66.3 and Kansas yields 67.9). Should be a low scoring game with both teams relying on defense to get them to the next round. Not sold on Maryland as a dog because of Melo Trimble and his sudden problems with the three point shot. Only bet on this one is the under. With a slight lean to Maryland if you need to take a side.
