Michigan State hosts non-conference foe BYU on Saturday. The Spartans started the season 2-0, but have suffered a pair of rough defeats in Big Ten play, including last weekend’s overtime loss to Indiana.

A week after failing to score a touchdown against Wisconsin, the Spartans’ offense did well against Indiana, with quarterback Tyler O’Conner throwing for three touchdowns. But injuries on defense have made it difficult for Michigan State to be consistent on that side of the ball, allowing 27.3 points over the last three games. The Cougars enter the game on a high after a 55-53 victory over Toledo, powered by running back Jamaal Williams’ school-record 286 yards and five touchdowns. Keeping that ground attack going will be tough, though, as the Spartans rank 16th in the nation, allowing 105.5 rushing yards.

About Brigham Young Cougars (2-3):

Last time out for BYU, they were a 55-53 winner as they battled Rockets at home. BYU failed to cover in the match as a -3-point favorite, while 108 combined points moved the game OVER for totals bettors.

The Rockets had 692 yards of total offense, including 505 yards through the air. The Cougars allow 444.2 yards of total offense per game, though stopping the run is a strength for BYU, which allows 134 per game.

About Michigan State Spartans (2-2):

Michigan State was a 24-21 loser in their most recent outing on the road against Hoosiers. They failed to cover the -5-point spread as favorites, while the total score (45) made winners of UNDER bettors.

Quarterback O’Conner’s performance in a loss, 21-of-35 for 263 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions was good enough to win. It is the defense that will haunt this team for the rest of the season.

Brigham Young vs Michigan State Prediction:

All of BYU’s games have been decided by three or fewer points, so getting 6 points is extremely attractive. I have this game coming down to the last series as both offenses are able to move the ball. As long as I can get 4.5 points or more I am on the Cougars. I also like the over in this one as both teams have shown a weakness on defense that the other offense can exploit.

Brigham Young vs Michigan State Pick: BYU +6 & over 49.5
