2016 College Football Week 1 Preview

Colorado kicks off a new season Friday with its annual Rocky Mountain Showdown contest against Colorado State at Denver’s Sports Authority Field. The Buffalo’s are 5-40 in conference play since joining the Pac-12 in 2011, and it’s easy to understand why head coach Mike MacIntyre might feel a need to win now. With games against Michigan, Oregon, USC and Stanford it is vital for the Buffalo’s to get any win they can. Colorado State meanwhile, enters 2016 looking to continue a run of three straight winning seasons and bowl appearances

Offense: Starters returning – 8; Defense: Starters returning – 9
The Buffaloes came close last year dropping five games last season by eight points or fewer, including 35-31 to UCLA, 27-24 to USC, and 20-14 to Utah. They start the season with 17 returning starters making Colorado one of the most experienced rosters in the nation. Linebackers Addison Gillam and Kenneth Olugbode and cornerback Chidobe Awuzie lead a defense which second in the Pac-12 against the pass (218.2 yards allowed per game) but was gashed by the run (198.7 yards).

Over the last four years the Buffalo have been a bottom dweller in the PAC12. They have gone 11-38 straight up and only 21-27 against the spread. Last season they went 4-9 SU and 5-7 ATS. One of the betting stats that stands out last year is that they were 4-9 if you were betting the over.

It is easy to see why the were so bad in covering the over with an offense that ranked 97th in the country and only averaged 24.6 points per game. The big deficit on the offense was yards per rush where they averaged 3.75, which ranked 111th. On defense they gave up an average of 27.5 points per game to rank 70th in the country. The one big problem on defense was the inability to stop the rush as they averaged over 5 yards per rush against them.

Offense: Starters returning – 6; Defense: Starters returning – 7
Mike Bobo enters his second year as head coach, the former Georgia offensive coordinator is looking for a fourth consecutive season in the Mountain West Mountain Division title hunt. Having led Colorado State to a winning record last season. QB Nick Stevens (2,679 pass yds, 21 TDs) returns for his junior year. The Colorado State ground game looks solid with Dalyn Dawkins and Izzy Matthews, who combined to rush for 1,678 yards and eight TDs last year.

Colorado State has a four year straight up record of 29-23 and was 28-22 ATS. Last year CSU was 7-6 SU & 6-6 ATS.

In 2015, Colorado State was a pretty average team with a 62nd ranking in points scored (29.6) and 64th in points allowed with (27.2). The one thing that stands out is the inability to stop the run with the Rams finishing 107th in the nation with 213 yards per game.

Colorado State vs Colorado College Football Prediction

Why are the Buffaloes laying more than a TD to their in state rival? Last year they won in overtime and I have this game as close as last years. I know Colorado returns almost all of its starters but, is that a good thing? Colorado just doesn’t have the talent on the offensive and defensive lines that you would expect in a PAC12 team. The Rams will have Nick Stevens under center again and he should be able to move the ball against Colorado. Also, Georgia transfer Faton Bauta should be able to get some good yards against a Colorado defense that can’t stop the run. I have two bets on this game I am taking the Rams +8.5 & under 59 points. These are two separate straight bets with 50% of my game bankroll on both bets.
