ABOUT OKLAHOMA (11-2)
Offense: Starters returning – 8; Defense: Starters returning – 6
Reigning Big 12 Player of the Year QB Baker Mayfield returns for his junior season to once again lead Oklahoma, as do RBs Samaje Perine and Joe Mixon who combined to rush for more than 2,000 yards last season. The line should be in good shape with three returning starters. The Sooners lose their best pass rushers from last year, but a strong secondary should help offset the loss.
The Sooners once again are one of the best teams in the country. Over the last four years they are 40-12 straight up. However, against the spread over the last four years they are just 28-24. Last year they were 11-2 SU and 9-4 ATS. Against non conference teams they were 2-2 ATS. On the road they were 5-2 ATS.
In 2015 the Sooners were one of the top teams in the nation averaging 43.5 points per game which ranked 5th nationally. On defense, they were good but not great and ranked 28th in the country and gave up an average of 22 points per game. In particular, they were weak against the rush and only ranked 53rd in the country.
ABOUT HOUSTON (13-1)
Offense: Starters returning – 5; Defense: Starters returning – 6
Houston went 13-1 in Tom Herman’s first year as head coach and won the Chick-fil-A Bowl against Florida State. The Cougars will have the services of a pair of talented transfers in former Texas RB Duke Catalon and former Oklahoma WR Ra’Shaad Samples. Expect QB Greg Ward Jr. to build on an impressive ’15 season in which he passed for 2,828 yards and 17 TDs, and ran for 1,253 and 21.
Houston has been a good team with a 34-18 straight record and a 31-20 ATS record over four years. Last year though, they were 13-1 SU & 9-5 ATS. At home they were 4-4 ATS and as underdogs they were 3-0.
In 2015, the offense was one of the best in the country ranking 10th in points scored with 40.4 per game. They ranked 13th in the country in rushing with 235.8 yards per game. Defensively, they were 20th ranked and gave up an average of 20.7 points per game. They excelled at stopping the run and ranked 8th.

Oklahoma vs Houston College Football Prediction
Even if I didn’t bet on this game, as a college football fan this would be a game I watched. I fully expect Houston to keep it close with Oklahoma in NRG Stadium which is in Houston and will have the feel of a home game. QB Greg Ward Jr showed what he can do against top-tier competition in the Peach Bowl against Florida State. As for the Sooners, in 2015 they won by more than 10 points only once in five games against Top 25 teams.
One of the keys to the game is Houston’s ability to run the ball and Oklahoma’s not being a top team against the run. The Cougars have a legitimate chance of winning this game but 10 points are just too many to pass up.
