About Tulane Green Wave

Offense: Starters returning – 8; Defense: Starters returning – 8
New head coach Willie Fritz brings a running philosophy offense to Tulane and that might be just what they need as Tulane has a solid corps of running backs. The big question for Tulane is what will happen at quarterback. The coaches style and talent at Tulane should be able to give the Green Wave a quicker start than the odds makers think.

Over the last four years the Green Wave have been a down program with a straight up record of 15-34 and last years was no different with a 3-9 record straight up. However, we are here to bet and against the spread over the last four years the Green Wave have a 26-23 record. Last year they went 6-6. The difference between straight up and ATS records is significant and makes Tulane a team to watch for good ATS spots. A few more ATS results over the last four years has the Green Wave, 11-13 on the road & 7-10 in non-conference play.

In 2015 the offense was one of the worst in football averaging just 19.7 points a game which ranked 113th. Yards a game ranked 120th at 317 yards per game. On defense they gave up an average of 36.3 point per game which ranked 110th. That was significantly higher than the 80th ranking in defensive yards allowed per game. This was caused by offensive breakdowns that lead to cheap points for the opposition last year.

About Wake Forest Demon Deacons

Offense: Starters returning – 9; Defense: Starters returning – 7
Wake Forest’s 2016 will depend largely on developing an offense. The offensive line was one of the worst in FBS last season. The running backs lack breakaway talent and the quarterback play has been inconsistent. The Deacons will have trouble scoring against any team that has a decent defensive line.

Over the last four years Wake Forest has a 15-31 straight up record and a 22-26 ATS record. Again, a team that has done better on the spread than winning outright. Last year the Deacons were 6-6 ATS and 3-9 straight up. At home over four years they have been 12-13 with a 3-3 ATS record last year. Against non-conference teams 7-9 over four years and 2-2 ATS last year. In other words, Wake Forest is the face of mediocrity when it comes to spread betting.

In 2015 the offense was a joke. They averaged 17.4 points a game which ranked 120th overall. The only offensive category to rank in the top 90 in College Football was passing yards per game which was 228 yards per game and ranked 30th overall. The reason for this is obvious. They were behind so much it was just cheap yards against soft defenses. Speaking of the defense, here is where Wake Forest showed some promise last year. They ranked 43rd overall by giving up an average of 24.6 points per game. In first downs per game they ranked really well at 28th in the country. However, the weakness of giving up big plays is exposed by the 89th ranking in yards per passing attempt. A solid defensive effort would be wasted by defensive backs that just looked lost at times.

Tulane vs Wake Forest Pick

Willie Fritz is a good hire for Tulane if the past is any prediction on the future. At Georgia Southern when Fritz arrived in 2014; he went 17-7 and 14-2 in the Sun Belt. He has a history of getting out of the gate quick with teams by running the ball and playing an attacking defense. Wake Forest is improving but the cupboard was empty and now there are a few items in it but not enough to be a 17 point favorite against anyone in FBS. I like Wake Forest to win a close game but I am taking the points. Right now it is 17 and I am all over that as I expect the spread to be bet down to 14 by kick off.

Free Pick: Tulane +17
