2016 College Football Week 1 Preview

No. 24 UCLA Bruins travel to Texas A&M, where crowds of 100,000 typically fill Kyle Field to open the 2016 college football season for both teams. UCLA will see a familiar face on the Aggies, with offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone who had the same role for the Bruins for the last four years.

Trevor Knight, a graduate transfer from Oklahoma transferred during the off-season after he was beaten out for the starting job by Baker Mayfield. UCLA sophomore quarterback Josh Rosen, who threw for 3,670 yards and 23 touchdowns with 11 interceptions last season will lead the offense.

ABOUT UCLA ( 8-5)

Offense: Starters returning – 4; Defense: Starters returning – 7
UCLA gets QB Josh Rosen (3,670 yds, 23 TD) is back after a remarkable freshman season. Kennedy Polamalu was promoted to offensive coordinator after spending the last two seasons as running backs coach for the Bruins. On the other side of the ball, UCLA has spent a big chunk of the off-season shoring up its run defense, and a big part of that responsibility has been handed to defensive lineman Eddie Vanderdoes, who suffered a season-ending knee injury in the season opener last year against Virginia.

Over the last four years the Bruins have been a good team but not a great one. They are 37-16 straight up but only 27-25 ATS. Last season they were 8-5 SU & just 5-7 ATS.

In 2015 the Bruins ranked in the upper half of the nation on offense and defense but really didn’t distinguish themselves in either category. On offense they ranked 45th at 32.2 points per game. On defense they ranked 54th at 26 points per game. The major area of concern was the inability to stop the rush as the Bruins ranked 98th in the country vs the run.

ABOUT TEXAS A&M (8-5)

Offense: Starters returning – 6; Defense: Starters returning – 7
The Aggies won their first five games last seasons, but went 3-5 the rest of the way. Texas A&M’s weakness last season was its offense. The Aggies hope that a duo of transfers at QB and RB will generate some points. Texas A&M will rely heavily on the defense and it helps to have one of the nation’s best in defensive end Myles Garrett, who led the SEC last season with 12 1/2 sacks, 19 1/2 tackles for loss and five forced fumbles. On the opposite end is Daeshon Hall, who contributed seven sacks, 14 1/2 tackles for loss and two forced fumbles last season, including four sacks and both forced fumbles in the season opener against Arizona State.

Texas A&M has been a good team with a 36-16 straight record but only 23-29 ATS record over four years. Last year though, they were 8-5 SU & 5-8 ATS. At home they were 2-5 ATS and as favorite they were 5-4.

In 2015, the offense was in the bottom half of the country ranking only 71st in points scored at 27.8 per game. On defense they ranked 28th at 22 points per game. If there was a weakness on the Texas A&M defense, it was stopping the run as they ranked 108th and gave up 213.7 yards per game.

UCLA vs Texas A&M College Football Prediction

I don’t like seeing these two teams play each other because, I like to bet against both of them. These are two of my overrated teams this year. Last year they both went 8-5 and I can see around 8 or 9 win season for both of them again. Here is the thing about this game that is important. There are two different lines out there and you should take the one you like. Right now Bovada has Texas A&M -3, while Sportsbetting.ag has them -3.5. That’s right, you can get that hook if you pick the sportsbook that is on your team. I like the Bruins to keep it close so I will be betting at Sportsbetting.ag. If you like Texas A&M then you should bet at Bovada.
