Hokies vs Golden Hurricane Pick
2015 Independence Bowl Preview
Making its 20th bowl appearance, Tulsa will try to improve to .500 in bowl games when it squares off against Virginia Tech for the first time since 1978 in the Camping World Independence Bowl. The Hokies have appeared in a bowl game in 23 straight seasons, a streak that began against Indiana in the 1993 Independence Bowl, and hope to end head coach Frank Beamer’s illustrious career on a high note.
Players to watch
Golden Hurricane wide receiver Keyarris Garrett finished the regular season as the nation’s second-leading receiver with 1,451 yards. The senior, who hauled in seven touchdown receptions, has six 100-yard games and is one of two FBS players with a pair of 200-yard receiving games.
Hokies Isaiah Ford, a consensus All-ACC wide receiver, led the conference with a school-record 10 touchdowns. The sophomore had 63 receptions for 937 yards and finished the season strong with 276 receiving yards over the final two games.
Tulsa is 3-1 against Virginia Tech, including three straight wins, with all four games decided by 7 points or less.
The Golden Hurricane are 9-10 in bowl games but have won four of their last five.
Of Tulsa’s 51 offensive touchdowns, 30 have come in less than 2 minutes and 18 of those came in under a minute.
The Golden Hurricane have scored 40 points in five of their six wins and allowed 30 points in all six of their losses.
Virginia Tech is 49-2 since 2004 when rushing for 200 yards, including an 8-0 record since 2013.
Ford needs 26 yards to pass Andre’ Davis (962 yards in 1999) for the best single-season receiving mark in school history.
Virginia Tech is 10-12 in bowls games during its current FBS-best streak of consecutive bowl appearances.
Tulsa is 7-16 SU in its last 23 games
The total has gone OVER in 17 of Tulsa’s last 25 games
The total has gone UNDER in 7 of Virginia Tech’s last 8 games
Virginia Tech vs Hokies
Virginia Tech is a big 14 point favorite. I know the coach is going away and all but this is a bowl game and Virginia Tech under performed this year. Tulsa is not a good team but they have a decent offense and the Hokie offense has been to inconsistent to count on covering a double digit spread.
