About the San Francisco Giants

Madison Bumgarner will be going for the San Francisco Giants and he has a reputation of the best big game pitcher in baseball right now. This year he went 15-9 with a 2.74 ERA. Against the New York Mets this year in two starts, he is 2-0 with an ERA of 3.27. Bumgarner is 7-3 with a 2.14 ERA and 77 strikeouts in his postseason career. The Giants are 9-3 in their last 12 playoff road games and 5-2 in Bumgarners last 7 starts. The Giants are 4-0 in Bumgarners last 4 starts vs. Mets and the over is 6-1 in the last 7 meetings. However,  Bumgarner hasn’t been himself recently, as he had an ERA of 4.14 in the month of August and 3.92 in September. Bumgarner also has an ERA of 3.39 on the road compared to an ERA of 2.14 at home.

About the New York Mets

Noah Syndergaard had to pitch through less than perfect health for much of the season, but he still managed to go 14-9 with a 2.60 ERA. His pitching at home wasn’t as dominating as you might think in that he went only 6-6 with a 2.87 ERA. Against the Giants this year he was 1-1 in two starts with an ERA of 2.63. Syndergaard is 2-1 with a 3.32 ERA and 26 strikeouts in his postseason career. The Mets are 1-4 in their last 5 playoff games and 6-2 in Syndergaards last 8 starts.
On offense the Mets will rely on the long ball, as they finished fifth in the majors with 218 homeruns.

Giants vs Mets Prediction

Madison Bumgarner of 2014 was one of the most dominate post season performances in baseball since Orel Hershiser almost single handily won a World Series for the Dodgers. This is 2016 however and he has not been quite the same pitcher this year. Madison Bumgarner gave up 26 home runs this year with 19 of those home runs coming on the road. This will be a tough flaw for him to overcome against a hot Mets hitting team that had 218 home runs this year.

On offense, there is a definite difference in the month of September. The Mets offense finished 5th in scoring with 152 runs while the Giants finished 23rd in September scoring with 112 runs. What we have going in this playoff game is the 2016 Mets going against the memory of the 2014 Giants. This Giants team is just not as good and once the Mets get Mad Bum out of the game the Giants relievers will not be a match for New York.
