NFL Cincinnati Bengals vs New York Jets Pick

Two teams that have legitimate playoff expectations will go at it in Week 1 of the NFL season. It is a good chance for the Jets to see if they are ready to make a move up and challenge the Patriots for the division title. With Brady out, this is your chance Jets. For the Bengals, they return from another playoff season that lasted one game. These teams have a lot in common. Both play top defense, have a quarterback prone to the big mistake and are in a division where double digit wins might only get you a wild card playoff slot.

About Cincinnati Bengals (12-5)

Remember, this is regular season Bengals not playoff Bengals. The core of team that won a club record 12 games is back. Andy Dalton is fully recovered from broken thumb on passing hand that ended his season. The offensive line is one of the better lines in the NFL and doesn’t get enough credit for giving the Bengals a balanced offense. They will take a hit at wide receiver where they lost Jones and Sanu to free agency. The Bengals tight end Tyler Eifert, Dalton’s favorite target near goal line, is coming off ligament surgery on left ankle, missed all of camp and won’t be available for this game. The Bengals defense allowed second-fewest points in league last season. The defensive line is a strength with DT Geno Atkins and end Carlos Dunlap combining for 24 ½ sacks. One player who won’t be in uniform for the Bengals this week is linebacker Vontaze Burfict who will miss first three games of the season for illegal hits last year.

About New York Jets (10-6)

Who’s your quarterback? Butt fumble has moved on and now Ryan Fitzpatrick is fully entrenched as the starter. Last season Fitzpatrick had a career year in which he set franchise record with 31 TDs. The Jets offense finished 10th last season and looks like it will be able to put up some points this year. Wide receivers Brandon Marshall (109 catches, 1,502 yards, 14 TDs) and Eric Decker (80, 1,027, 12) are back and along with Fitzpatrick should put up similar numbers this year. If there is a big change on the Jets offense it will come from running back Matt Forte who is a top pass catching running back. This will give Fitzpatrick a check down back to and keep drives alive. The big question will be the offensive line with Clady coming off knee injury, right tackle Breno Giacomini om PUP.  On defense the Jets ranked 4th overall and 13th against the rush. The 30 takeaways were tied for 3rd in the NFL. The key for them is CB Darrelle Revis must continue to dominate and takeaway the other teams top receiver.

Bengals vs Jets Prediction

The New York Jets in the playoffs? If it is going to happen this is the type of game the Jets need to win. They are at home and have a chance to get up a couple of games on the Patriots. As a gambler, I like both of these teams. They don’t have the reputation of the Steelers or Patriots but the cover ATS and thats what I care about. The Jets were 4-1-1 in their last 6 games in 2015.  The Bengals were a 12-3-2 last season. How can a playoff team like the Bengals keep covering like this? The public has that ESPN hype going about how bad they do in the playoffs and they are transferring that to the regular season. The Bengals have one of the best combination of offensive and defensive lines you will find in the NFL. In the playoffs last year the didn’t have Andy Dalton and it showed. Dalton has finally grown enough that he can guide an offense in an important game. On the other side there is Ryan Fitzpatrick. He is a move up from “Butt Fumble” but he still will make the stupid mistake. If you can get any pressure on him he will try and complete the pass instead of throwing it away and trying again on the next down. You just can’t do that against teams in the top half of defense in the NFL and get away with it consistently. The Bengals defensive line should be able to get the better of the Jets offensive line. I like the Bengals -2.5 and I will only take them up to -3 points. If it goes to 3.5 then I would take them on the money line.

Cincinnati vs New York Pick: Bengals -2.5
