NFL New York Giants vs Dallas Cowboys Pick
The New York Giants will take a trip to Dallas to play the Cowboys in the opening game for the 2016 NFL season for both teams. It looked like it was going to be a quarterback match up between Manning and Romo but Tony got hurt again so we will see Dak as the new face to the Cowboys. Last year both of these teams had losing records and are looking to get back in the playoffs. One good thing for both of these teams is that the NFC East looks very weak now that Philadelphia has decided to go with a rookie quarterback. The Giants made several free agent moves on defense and the Cowboys went out and got a top running back.

About New York Giants (6-10)
With Tom Coughlin stepping down after 12 years and two Super Bowl titles with New York, the Giants now are in the hands of Ben McAdoo, the team’s former offensive coordinator. The Giants will take comfort in the fact, however, that unlike the Cowboys, they have emerged from the preseason relatively unscathed in the injury department. Of the 22 starters they projected back in July, all 22 could start against the Cowboys.
One player who has clearly flourished under the guidance of Ben McAdoo is Eli Manning. Manning had two of his best statistical seasons for the Giants since McAdoo arrived in 2014. Over the last two years, Manning was ranked third in the NFL in touchdowns (65) and sixth in passing yards (8,842). In 2015, he threw for a career high 35 touchdowns while setting franchise records in attempts (618) and completions (387).
Benefiting largely from Manning’s recent play is Odell Beckham Jr. He has been spectacular for the Giants the past two seasons, racking up 187 catches, 2,755 yards and 25 touchdowns. Those mind-blowing numbers rank second, first, and fourth in NFL history, respectively. He will have his work cut out for him, however, against a Dallas secondary that was fifth in the NFL in passing defense, allowing just 227.0 yards per game last season. An area of concern will be the offensive line which could not establish the running game until late last season, and it has struggled again in preseason. The tight ends can catch, but they can’t block and that has contributed to the offensive running problems.
On defense, the Giants underwent a massive makeover and handed out almost $200 million in contracts to free agents. Defensive end Olivier Vernon is turning out to be every bit the pass rusher the Giants hoped he’d be and defensive tackle Damon Harrison has teamed with Johnathan Hankins to make running up the middle against the Giants almost impossible. The Giants improved their secondary, adding Janoris Jenkins at cornerback and rookie Darian Thompson at safety.
2015 against the spread they were 8-6, on the road 4-3, against division opponents 3-3. In this years preseason they were 2-2 against the spread.

About Dallas Cowboys (4-12)
Tony Romo is injured…again. The quarterback suffered a compression fracture in his back in the preseason game against Seattle. It’s a huge blow not only for the Cowboys but also for Romo who missed 12 games last season after breaking his collarbone twice. With Romo out for the next 6-10 weeks, the Cowboys will go with a rookie quarterback Dak Prescott. The Mississippi State rookie had an outstanding preseason, completing 78 percent of his passes for 454 yards and five touchdowns. As a senior college in the spread offense, he completed 66.2 percent of his passes for 3,793 yards, with 29 touchdowns and only five interceptions.
The Cowboys will need to adapt the offense to help out Dak. One area they can to this is with play action passing. Over the last five seasons, the Cowboys have consistently ranked near the bottom of the NFL in play-action passing plays attempted (they were 30th in 2015). They have footballs best offensive line and a top running backs in rookie Ezekiel Elliott this season. It looks like the Cowboys were already in the process of making that adjustment during the preseason, where the Cowboys had Dak attempt 14 of the 50 passes on play action.
A questionable defense didn’t get much help over the offseason. Top defensive pick Jaylon Smith likely won’t play while recovering from college knee injury. Linebacker Rolando McClain, defensive ends DeMarcus Lawrence and Randy Gregory will miss start of season on suspensions.
In 2015, the Cowboys ranked 29th in scoring differential with -6.2 points per game. Some against the spread numbers from last season; 4-11 overall, 1-6 at home, 2-4 in the division. In preseason there wasn’t any improvement as they went 1-3 against the spread.

Giants vs Cowboys Prediction
The Giants have lost each of their last five season openers, three of which have come against the Cowboys. Expectations are for a different start under new head coach Ben McAdoo. It won’t be a big change for Manning as he was offensive coordinator for the last two seasons.
The Cowboys expected to be playoff contenders again with a healthy Romo and Bryant. Now they must hope Prescott can at least keep them into contention until Romo returns. However, last season when Romo was out the entire team seemed to fall apart. This season they intended to rely more on the running game anyway. It was in part to keep Romo healthy by taking fewer hits and to help offset a defensive that was beaten regularly. Looking at the off season moves; the Giants spent heavily on defense and it will pay off in this game. The Giants can stack against the run and force Dak to beat them. On the other side, the Cowboys did not bring in the talent to slow down the Giants passing attack. Right now the Giants are hanging around a pick for the game. I am placing my money on the Giants to win outright and it might not even be close.
