Green Bay Packers vs Indianapolis Colts Preview

The Colts and Packers will each make their fifth appearance in the NFL/Hall of Fame Game.

About the Indianapolis Colts

The Indianapolis Colts hope for a bounce back season after missing the playoffs with an 8-8 record and should be in good shape if they can stay healthy. Andrew Luck should get in a series before you start to see Scott Tolzien enters the game. Tolzien spent the last three seasons with the Packers.

Colts in HOF Game (2-2-0)
• 1964 – vs. Pittsburgh Steelers (W, 48-17)
• 1982 – vs. Minnesota Vikings (L, 14-30)
• 1996 – vs. New Orleans Saints (W, 10-3)
• 2008 – vs. Washington Redskins (L, 16-30)

Indianapolis Head Coach Chuck Pagano has a 5-11 straight up record in preseason games since taking over the team in 2012. The Indianapolis Colts preseason ATS record over that same period is 7-9. Including a preseason spread betting result of 1-3 the last two years under Pagano.

About the Green Bay Packers

The Green Bay Packers are looking at getting to the Super Bowl. Health is the primary concern for the Packers on offense as Aaron Rodgers, Randall Cobb and, Jordy Nelson will all have to stay on the field for them to have a chance to make it to the Super Bowl this year. However, this is the first preseason game so the talent you know isn’t going to be the talent you see. The Packers will play Brett Hundley at quarterback to give him more reps. On defense, expect it to be a mass rotation as everyone gets a look. The defense looked pretty ragged against Arizona in the playoffs and they need to find some play makers to get the defense on par with the offense.

• 1969 – vs. Atlanta Falcons (W, 38-24)
• 1980 – vs. San Diego Chargers (T, 0-0)*
• 1993 – vs. Los Angeles Raiders (L, 3-19)
• 2003 – vs. Kansas City Chiefs (L, 0-9)*

Green Bay Head Coach Mike McCarthy has a straight up preseason record of 20-19 over since he took over the team in 2006. The preseason ATS results for the Packers over the last six years is a mediocre 11-12.

Packers vs Colts NFL Hall of Fame Pick

NFL Prediction * HOF Game 08-07-16 * Week 1
The NFL preseason betting may get some laughs. However, money won in the preseason counts just as much as money won during the regular season. It is a good time to pick your spots and help build your bankroll. Let’s start with the most obvious thing. The starters will not play very long in this one. Would you really risk two veteran quarterbacks for a game that doesn’t matter. Rodgers and Luck are both locks at quarterback and both don’t need very many reps to get ready for the regular season. So, who will be playing quarterback?

Indianapolis Colts

Now that Matt Hasselbeck finally retired the Colts will be going with Scott Tolzen. Who? He is a 28 year old veteran and the Colts will be his fourth team. Not exactly the kind of backup you want. I know the coaches will say a lot of good things about him but, in reality they will not know what they have until he gets hit a few times. He needs to show them he can make adjustments at the line of scrimmage. In other words, he will get some extensive playing time. He had some significant playing time for Green Bay in 2013 and looked like crap. He ended up with 1 touchdown and 5 interceptions. The Colts have to look at him and see if they need to make a trade.

Green Bay Packers

On the other side is the Packers and quarterback Brett Hundley. In four preseason games, the former UCLA star showed enough promise for general manager Ted Thompson and coach Mike McCarthy to be comfortable with as a solid backup. He has spent time in the system and can really make a good impression in this game. If anything, the question will be how long the regular wide receivers and offensive lineman play. Considering what has happened to the Packers when Rodgers isn’t healthy. This will be a good chance for the Packers to get in plenty of reps for Hundley. I expect him to be the more effective quarterback in the Hall of Fame game.

My free pick for the NFL 2016 Hall of Fame Game

Hundley is doubtful for the game. If he does not play in the game my money will be bet on UNDER 36 and the Packers +3. Without him this game will feature some really awful quarterback play. We could end up with a game where more points are scored by the defense and special teams than by the offense. The final should not be more than 3 points one way or the other. Take the 3 and if you can buy the hook up to 3.5 take it along with the under
