NFL MNF Pittsburgh Steelers vs Washington Redskins Pick

Two teams that have legitimate playoff expectations will open up the first Monday Night Football game of 2016 season. Pittsburgh led the eventual Super Bowl champion Broncos on road in fourth quarter of the divisional round before a fumble by Fitzgerald Toussaint lead to a Broncos rally. The Steelers will have a chance of getting to the Super Bowl as long as Ben Roethlisberger remains healthy. The Redskins just got one step closer to the playoffs without playing a game. Romo is injured again and the Cowboys have not proven they can win without him

About Pittsburgh Steelers (12-5)

The Steelers will have one of the best offenses in the NFL again. They finished third in yards a year ago even with QB Ben Roethlisberger and RB Le’Veon Bell missing time due to injury and suspension. Bell will sit out first three games in 2016 after violating league’s substance abuse policy. However, backup DeAngelo Williams tied for NFL lead with 11 rushing touchdowns in 2015 so don’t expect any drop off in scoring. Antonio Brown is one of the best wide receivers in football. All the Steelers need to be a top offense is good health and stay away from the suspensions.

The Steelers defense is the question mark. They were burnt over and over in the secondary and will turn to a couple of rookies for help in Artie Burns and Sean Davis. The pass defense ranked 30th against pass last year so they have to make a move if out of nothing more than desperation. How did Pittsburgh make it so deep in the playoffs with a defense that was this bad against the pass? Turnovers. The Steelers ranked 4th in the NFL with 30 takeaways last season.

About Washington Redskins (10-6)

The Redskins are thinking playoffs this year. The have stability at quarterback with Kirk Cousins. Last season he threw for 4,166 yards and 29 touchdowns. He has some good targets to spread the ball around to with tight end Jordan Reed and wide receivers DeSean Jackson and Pierre Garcon. He will need to pass a lot this year because there really isn’t much at the running back position. The offense will be as good as Kirk Cousins is. The defense should be improved with the addition of one of the best defensive backs (Josh Norman) in football. Josh Norman and David Bruton who came over from the Broncos can really make the secondary a top unit.

Steelers vs Redskins Prediction

The Steelers could have easily made it to the Super Bowl if they played smart football and kept Big Ben healthy. They have another chance this year but Ben is getting older and more injury prone so the clock is ticking on them. The Redskins have been one of the worse teams in football but now are making some progress. The key match up in this game will be the Steelers offensive line vs the Redskins defensive line. The weakness on Washington last year and this year was the inability to generate a pass rush. With Ben Roethlisberger’s mobility, even a good secondary will get burnt if he has time to throw. The Redskins offense will be about passing and passing and passing. We have the number 7 ranked offense in points scored with the Steelers going against the number 11 ranked offense in the Redskins. The Steelers secondary will get give up some big plays and get a couple of turnovers.

For me this game should be a nice high scoring shootout to start off the Monday Night Football season. I have two bets on the game. I am placing 75% of my money on the over and I am placing 25% on a parlay of the Steelers -3 and the over. If they go to -3.5 or more then I will just lay all of my money on the over.
