San Jose Sharks Game One Preview

The San Jose Sharks have finally made to the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time in their history. The Sharks started by taking out the Los Angeles Kings in five games. They then dispatched the Predators in a seven game series. The St Louis Blues were taken out in six games. The Sharks have been a top road team this year so being on the road just might be the advantage they need to win it all. All but one of the team’s victories in the last two rounds of the postseason have been by a margin of at least three goals. Pavelski has been immense with a playoff-best 13 goals while playing alongside veteran Joe Thornton (15 assists) and Tomas Hertl, as has a power-play unit that has converted on 17-of-63 chances. Defenseman Brent Burns is third in the postseason with 20 points, trailing only Pavelski and Logan Couture, who leads all players with 24 points and 16 assists. Offseason acquisition Martin Jones has registered three shutouts in the last seven games.

Martin Jones has had a solid postseason in goal and has gone 12-6 with a 2.12 GAA. Jones is 32-19 with a 2.18 GAA in his career on the road and 2-2 with a 2.37 GAA in five career games vs the Penguins. On special teams the Sharks have converted on 27.0% of their power play chances, while allowing 19.6%.

Speed! Yes, these are two teams that will be quick on the ice to take advantage of any opportunity.  I could well see this game going into overtime to determine the winner. I do like this game as a toss up and with the Penguins at home I would take them to win if the odds were even. But, at -137 that is too steep for a game I see as even. My bet on this game will be the Sharks on the puck line at +1.5 goals. It doesn’t have the big return of a money line bet but I want to cash in this game. If it does go to OT, then I have money in the bank.
